Unprovoked Attack on Iran Could Lead to Impeachment Proceedings

With every passing day, war with Iran seems to be getting more and more imminent. And with Bush arrogant as ever, proclaiming that he is the decision maker. This could be the last straw for the democratic majority congress and impeachment proceedings could finally get underway. Ohio Democratic congressman Dennis Kucinich's congressional website http://kucinich.house.gov/ posted the following press release.

Kucinich: The White House Is Up To Its Old Tricks; Is Preparing the United States for an Attack on Iran : President’s Actions Could Lead to Impeachment

Washington, Jan 26 - WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 26) — Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) accused the White House of mounting a media blitz to prepare the U.S. public for an eventual attack on Iran. Today The Washington Post reported the Bush administration has authorized the U.S. military to kill or capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as part of an aggressive new strategy to weaken Tehran’s influence across the Middle East.

“The White House is up to its old tricks again: Providing information by anonymous sources and portraying Iran as an aggressor in Iraq,” Kucinich said.

“The President is mischaracterizing U.S. action vis à vis Iran. In fact, the U.S. is already engaged in offensive and provocative acts against Iran. The President’s strategy, by portraying our involvement as only being on the defensive, is laying out the groundwork for him to attack Iran and bypass authorization by Congress,” Kucinich said.

The Washington Post article stated:
“A senior intelligence officer was more wary of the ambitions of the strategy. ‘This has little to do with Iraq. It’s all about pushing Iran’s buttons. It is purely political.’ The official expressed similar views about other new efforts aimed at Iran, suggesting that the United States is escalating toward an unnecessary conflict to shift attention away from Iraq and to blame Iran for the United States’ increasing inability to stanch the violence there.”

Kucinich said, “The White House spin machine is at it again: this time providing justification for a new war — a war against Iran.” Kucinich pointed out that while the term ‘officials’ is mentioned 21 times in the Post article — not once are the officials identified by name.

In his January 10 address to the nation, President Bush asserted that succeeding in Iraq begins with addressing Iran and Syria. “Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops. We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We'll interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria. And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq,” Bush said.

“The Washington Post is quoting strategically placed Administration sources who are providing justification for an attack against Iran,” Kucinich said. “This new twist on Iran, a country this Administration refuses to have free and open diplomatic talks with, is stating the Administration’s case for war.”

“The degree to which this President continues to take steps to go to war against Iran without consulting with the full Congress is the degree to which he is increasingly putting himself in jeopardy of an impeachment proceeding,” Kucinich said.

1,000 US Troops Present Petition for Iraq Withdrawal to Kucinich

On January 16,2007 in Washington D.C., Congressman Kucinich received petitions from over 1,000 active duty members of the armed forces who are calling for a end to the war in Iraq. The following article is from his presidential campaign website http://kucinich.us/

1,000 US Troops Present Petition for Iraq Withdrawal to Kucinich

WASHINGTON, Jan.16, 2007 -- Congressman Kucinich today received petitions from over 1,000 active duty members of the armed services who are calling for an end to the war in Iraq. They are using a little known procedure called an appeal for redress which is provided for in the rules of the Department of Defense.

The Appeal for Redress from the war in Iraq reads: 'As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq. Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for the US troops to come home.'

These active duty, active reserve, and guard soldiers have signed this appeal at www.appealforredress.org

"Today on behalf of these men and women who proudly serve America, I will proudly present their appeal for redress to the Clerk of the House for referral to committee" said Kucinich.

"It is important to remember that many of these soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have seen combat in Iraq. They did not refuse to serve. They did not challenge any of their commanders orders, but they do have rights under the constitution and within the military code to present their grievances to the US Congress."

"We should pay careful attention to these brave men and women and I am determined that we should continue to support our troops by bringing them home."

Dennis Kucinich makes surprise appearance at the National Conference for Media Reform.

On Friday, January 11, 2007, Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich made a surprise appearance at the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tennessee. Introduced by Danny Glover, Kucinich announced that he would be heading up a new House subcommittee which will focus on issues surrounding the Federal Communications Commission. The announcement of The Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the House Government Reform Committee was to be officially announced this week in Washington D.C. but Kucinich let the news out early.

Kucinich said that the new committee would be holding hearings to push media reform right at the center of Washington. Media ownership, net neutrality and major telecommunications mergers are expected to be the major issues focused on by this new subcommittee. Kucinich also said that the committee would be holding hearings as well on reinstating the “Fairness Doctrine”, which is the rule that radio and television stations must provide the right to respond to allegations on controversial topics. This rule has not been in effect since 1987 when the Reagan administration eliminated it.

Now that Kucinich is chairman of this committee, he will now have jurisdiction over the Drug Czar’s office. Could we see a bigger agenda coming forth or am I thinking out loud again? Anyways this should be interesting to see what comes out of this situation in the next few months.

Kucinich: Bush setting stage for wider war

On the evening of January 10,2007 in Washington D.C., Dennis Kucinich issued a response to President Bush's nationally televised address to the American people. The following article is from his presidential campaign website http://kucinich.us/

Kucinich: Bush setting stage for wider war

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, January 10, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C - Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement tonight in response to President Bush's nationally televised address to the American people.

"President Bush appears to be setting the stage for a wider war in the region. He has blamed Iran for attacks on America. The President is vowing to disrupt Iran. He is going to add an aircraft carrier to the shores off the coast of Iran. He has promised to give Patriot missiles to 'our friends and allies.' Isn't one war enough for this President? It is time the media and the Congress began to pay attention to this President when he talks aggressively about Iran and Syria.

"It is imperative that Congress step up to its constitutional responsibility to restrain this abuse of executive authority by notifying the President that we will no longer agree to fund the war in Iraq.

"The supplemental budget request of up to $100 billion would enable the president not only to continue the war against Iraq through the end of his term. It would give him the resources to attack Iran, in the name of defending Iraq and the region.

"In Iraq, his new plan is a plan for more door-to-door fighting, more civil war, more civilian casualties, more troop deaths, more wasted money, more destabilization in the region, and more separation from the world community. The President wants to send more troops to Baghdad, where they will work to quell a civil war. Only a small portion -- less than 20 percent -- of the new effort will be spent in al Anbar, to fight al-Qaeda. Does anyone in this Administration have any sense left at all? They are sending more US troops into the middle of a civil war!

"Congress needs to take a stand against the President and take the necessary steps to bring our troops home. We need to begin talks with Iran and Syria -- and not blame them for our misguided war in Iraq. Diplomacy is the only way to avoid a widening war. If we follow the President's path of war, we will get . . . more war."

On Monday, Kucinich announced a 12-point plan to withdraw troops from Iraq, establish an international security and peacekeeping force under the auspices of the United Nations, and take steps to begin the political reconciliation process, shore up Iraq's economy, re-start reconstruction efforts, and institute reparations for Iraqis.
